the Auto Impasse
a short comedy-drama written & directed by Marshall Rimmer
VERNON JAMES, a struggling horse salesman, is about to make an vital sale that will keep his struggling business afloat. However, once he learns that the buyer intends on reselling the horse for "horse meat", Vernon in good conscious can't proceed with the sale. Defeated, he wonders how he's going to make a living.
Back in town, the automobile industry is booming! But inside Vernon's quiet office, he is forced to fire his employee to help cut costs. As much as it pains him to say, Vernon advises the boy that he should consider a future in the automotive industry. Vernon is old enough to know that industry is changing; he just desperately hopes he has enough time to ride his career out.
At home, his wife encourages him to use his business skills to work with automobiles. But Vernon finds comfort in what he has known his whole working life. We leave the audience knowing that Auto Impasse is an allegory for Artificial Intelligence in the film industry. Those who don't adapt will be left behind.
